Nestled in the picturesque Cornwall countryside is a beautiful five-bedroom house with a rich history dating back to the 1800s. Having undergone a previous extension in the 1980s, the property was recently transformed again, with a significant extension and the installation of a state-of-the-art underfloor heating (UFH) system from Continal Underfloor Heating. The goal of this latest project was to further enhance the property’s 6,000ft²+ of space and maximise the stunning views of the Cornwall countryside, blending modern comfort and energy efficiency with the charm of this historic home.

To meet the homeowners’ aspirations for a comfortable and energy-efficient living space, Continal’s TileFix®-18 UFH system was chosen. TileFix® is the only UFH system available in the UK that you can tile directly onto without the need to use a specialist tile adhesive, offering low profiles from just 18mm to help maximise build-up heights. Installers can use this low profile system to help keep floor heights level when moving between the old and new areas of the building, making it particularly suitable for use with extension and renovation projects.  

Offering fast response times and a high compressive strength, TileFix®-18 is designed to accept direct tiling with a flexible tile adhesive and is typically installed over existing solid or timber deck floors. It is compatible with ceramic, porcelain, marble and stone tiles with no loss of heat output and features universal panels with pipe routing for return loops and distribution, ensuring simple installation.

As with any project involving a historic building, there were unique challenges to overcome. The original section of the home, constructed in the 1800s, had uneven floors and varying substrates. The 1980s extension added further complexity with differing floor levels and materials. Meanwhile, the new extension’s contemporary design required a cohesive integration of old and new, ensuring that the UFH system performed optimally across the entire ground floor.

To overcome these challenges the TileFix®-18 panels were installed throughout the ground floor before being topped with a self-levelling screed, which ensured an even floor level across both the original structure and the new extension. This approach not only achieved a seamless aesthetic but also created a larger heat mass throughout the space, maximising heat outputs and improving the property’s overall energy efficiency.
